What’s worth talking about on the Republican Side?

Seriously.  I’m trying to think of something that isn’t about some of the deeper threads in the Democratic Party, but I can’t think of anything to say about Trump or Cruz that isn’t old territory.

On a personal note, I like to try and unpack Trump support to prove it’s not all racists and xenophobes, but I’m kind of lost.  Happy to be pointed in a direction.

  1. I find the Republican contest much more compelling this year, and not just because of the Trump clown show. While the rise of the Sanders campaign and the question whether his movement can be sustained going forward as a truly liberal wing of the Democratic Party, are important questions. Especially for those of us who favor many of those liberal objectives. However, Hillary’s victory has always been a foregone conclusion.

In the GOP, we have a political party that controls congress, most of the governorships, and a clear majority of state legislatures, and there are twelve of the fifty states (24%) in which it’s impossible to even imagine a Democrat being elected state wide. And yet at the Presidential level, it seems to be breaking apart and is about to nominate someone who is not only a national embarrassment, but someone who does not support many of the positions of the conservative base of the party. O.k., Laska, I’m in. Let’s turn to the GOP, a fitting thing to do on the day when Mr. Trump might well sew up the party’s nomination. I also think there’s more to Trump’s support than just racism and xenophobia.
